Welcome to the Website of Amber Shay Nicholson!

I am a classically trained pianist, with a doctorate in piano performance and a musical heritage that can be traced back to Beethoven himself.  I enjoy all aspects of playing and teaching the piano.  You will find me on stage often, either in solo recital or collaborating with other musicians.  I try to maintain an active performing schedule because the process of learning and performing music will make anyone a better musician and teacher.  You can find my upcoming performance schedule here

I also enjoy teaching and have broad experience with all ages and levels of students.  I have taught both privately and at the college level, as well as via online platforms such as Skype and Zoom.  I believe in giving students a balanced presentation of repertoire, technique, theory, and history.  I also have experience in coaching accompanists & ensembles, and explaining healthy piano technique.  Pianists have come to me for help with technical problems and assistance in retraining with healthier habits.  A healthy technique is essential for both the best sound and the most efficient, comfortable approach to the keyboard.  A summary of my teaching philosophy is given below, and you can find more of my biographical information here

Teaching Philosophy:

My goal is to help students develop into independent musicians, by providing training in different styles of repertoire, music history, music theory, technical development, and interpretive skills.  As each student's understanding of music deepens, so will his or her love of music.  Not everyone is destined to become a famous performer; but every student can learn & achieve something, no matter the level.  I focus on training the ear, the heart, and the mind, along with the fingers.

Much of this instruction takes place in the weekly private lesson, but adequate at-home practice time is essential for making the most of these lessons.  The study of music should be enjoyable and rewarding, but learning to play & master an instrument is hard work that requires much personal discipline.

Please contact me today for additional information regarding studio openings and other details.  Click here for more information about my studio policies.  My in-home piano studio (with 2 pianos for lessons and ensemble playing) is based in Tidioute, PA, along the Allegheny River between the cities of Titusville and Warren, PA.  I am within reasonable driving distance from Titusville, Warren, Youngsville, Tionesta, Oil City, Russell, and other nearby communities.  To follow Nicholson Piano Studio on Facebook, join me here: https://www.facebook.com/NicholsonPianoStudio/
